First Light

I just saw my first lightning bug of the season while I was walking my (Rudy) dog last night!  Lightning bugs or fireflies are such a joy to me.  I never will forget the time I lived in Whiteville, NC.  My backyard was literally a forest.  Never before have I ever seen so many lightning bugs as I saw when I lived there.  During the months of June and July I would just go out in the back yard and sit with my arm around my Springer Spaniel  - Cocoa and watch the show.  It was as if they knew they had an audience.  They flew in figure 8 and circle formations in and out and around the trees.  It was very relaxing, magical, delightful...; the experience actually defies description!

The only other time I have witnessed something that evoked the same thoughts, feelings and emotions was last summer when I watched the performance of Philobolus performing "Lanterna Magica."  Their performance had me memorized, even forgetting to breath at some points.  It was then I also suspected that Cocoa and I were not the only ones to witness a truly magical firefly production.

It is always fun to see lightning bugs.  The light emitted from their little bodies is actually the result of a chemical reaction; it is intentional and it has a practical purpose.  They use the light to attract other fireflies for mating.  Whenever you see fireflies light up, it is because they are sending their little signals to each other, so they can get what they want!

So this raises at least a couple of questions:

When is the last time you witnessed something magical or spellbinding?
Do you ever show anyone your light?
